- What is X.NU?
X.NU is a useful service that makes an URL shorter. An URL that is hundreds of characters long can be garbled and difficult to copy from email or forum post. Sometimes you can't use long URLs within social networks (i.e. Twitter) or instant messaging services. X.NU is a length-optimized service: instead of creating a human readable hyperlink, it shrinks the URL string as much as possible. As an additional service, X.NU offers URL customization only to registered users who want to improve URL legibility rather than making them shorter. - How does X.NU work?
The low complexity algorithm of X.NU guarantees an excellent short URL management all over the addressable URL space. The process of creating a short URL is as fast as the HTTP redirection of it. In order to make the target URL readable from robots, X.NU handles this redirection through a 301 HTTP header (moved permanently). The optimization of the URL length is provided by a based-66 encoding. The resulting URLs are well interpreted as hypertext links in all social network clients and instant messaging services. - How do I create a personal account?
To create a new account I have to select the button “sign in” located at the top page. I get a small screen and I choose “create new account”. I fill out the form then I receive a confirm notification on email and a link to activate my account. So I’m able to log in and use the service. - What are API?
X.NU allows developers to interact with the website via an Application Programming Interface (API). If you are planning to use X.NU to create short or customized URLs, do it for free through simple HTTP GET requests. To obtain access to an API XNU, send an email to api@x.nu, describing the type of operation you are going to do and defining the following features:
- Purpose of use
- Estimate of requests per second
- Host name of the site that makes calls “Ajax”, or public IP (or form) of the servers that make calls to the service
- How can I share an X.NU short URL?
Authentication is done by using the x.nu “Share” button next to the URL or clicking on "copy” and paste the URL on posts of their blogs or social networks. - How should I read the statistics?
As a registered user you can see statistics of your XNU URL. You can view the clicks made and its site of origin. If you do not want to follow more update, you can remove the line statistics. This option will not remove the short URL. - How can I get advertising on x.nu?
